About Our Churches

All Saints | Allhallows

Allhallows has one church in regular use – All Saints – but also has the ruins of an earlier church.

All Saints | Boltongate

Outward appearance is perpendicular but inside there is a remarkable nave vaulted roof, entirely foreign to English Gothic architecture, which is unique to this country.

St Michael and All Angels | Isel

The Church is situated beside the River Derwent, close to the grounds of Isel Hall, this church dates from around 1130AD.

St Michael and All Angels | Torpenhow

The remote church of St. Michael and All Angels, overlooks the Solway Firth and dates back to 1120.

St Bega | Bassenthwaite

The church is situated in fields on the East shore of Bassenthwaite Lake. It is dedicated to the Celtic Saint, Bega.

St Cuthbert | Embleton

St Cuthbert’s is 3/4mile south of Embleton village. It was built 1806 on the site of an older church.

St Cuthbert | Plumbland

The site of the church has had some Christian significance for more than a thousand years, and preserved from that time are a fragment of an Anglian (Saxon) cross-shaft (built into the first floor of the tower) and two parts of a Viking hogback tombstone, now in the porch.

St James | Uldale

A delightful church of c.1150.

Little evidence remains of its Norman origins due to repairs and extensions in the 16th and 19th centuries.

St John | Bassenthwaite

The Church is situated in Bassenthwaite village. St John’s is a large airy church, surrounded by a good-sized burial ground.

St James | Ireby

Ireby has one church in regular use – St James – but also has the substantial remains of an earlier church, which is situated one mile from Ireby on the road to Torpenhow.

St Barnabas | Setmurthy

The present church, a plain four square building, dates from 1794 and replaced an earlier one of 1225.

St Margaret | Wythop

St Margaret’s Church sits in a beautiful elevated location, overlooking the Embleton Valley and Bassenthwaite Lake.
